The three elements I've found most helpful in changing harmful habits and patterned behavior (addictions):

  1. First, pause and notice that you're feeling something uncomfortable (most don't realize this) and that you're hoping this pattern will make it go away. Get curious about what that feeling actually is. Be with it.

  2. Remind yourself of the consequences: the temporary relief is actually followed by pain that's often 2-50x worse than just staying with the discomfort. Your brain is selling you a terrible deal.

  3. If the urge is too burning, with all that "be with your feelings" wisdom completely out the window, redirect your energy ASAP to something tactile and constructive: deep breaths, walking, calling a friend. Then come back to your deeper intention for how you want to live; reconnect with what matters most to your soul. Proceed from that place.
