❄️🦌 REINDEER RACING IN FINLAND? YES, PLEASE! 🇫🇮✨

This past weekend, the tiny town of Salla—nestled near the Russian border, 264 km northeast of Oulu—hosted the legendary Salla Reindeer Cup, and it was EVERYTHING. 🎿💨

Despite subfreezing temps, around 1,000 fans bundled up to watch trained male reindeer sprint a kilometer of snow-covered track, pulling their handlers on skis. Fastest pair wins! 🏆

🌍 Spectators traveled from Finland, Italy, Norway, Germany, France, and beyond to witness this unique tradition rooted in Sami Indigenous culture—and dating back to the 1950s, when forest workers first raced their fit, late-winter reindeer for fun.

🔥 The premier "Hot Series" is no joke: only reindeer who clock 1 km in 1:19 or less qualify. As event head Lasse Aatsinki says: "It's a science. A lot depends on the reindeer's character—it has to tolerate the crowd, noise, other reindeer… Everyone has their tricks—and they're usually kept under the fur hat." 🎩🤫

📣 The crowd cheered "Hyvä, hyvä!" and "Mene, mene!" ("Good, good!" / "Go, go!") as racers blasted down the final stretch. Between heats? Warm reindeer soup + kampanisu (Salla's famous local pastry). Pure cozy magic. 🥣🥐

🎉 AND THE WINNER IS… POMPOM! 🎉 Owner Hannu Krupula beamed: "Pompom is exceptionally fast and smart—and you rarely find one like that. If there's any weakness, it's that it's not very good-looking—which can be misleading!" 😄 Turns out, champions come in all packages.

🎁 Post-race reward for all reindeer? Their favorite: fresh lichen. Well earned! 🌿
