I’ve seen 25 years of Scholastic Book Fairs. I’ve noticed a decline in the complexity of texts, the variety of novels offered (more graphic novels aren’t necessarily a bad thing), and an increase in picture-book nonfiction.
I want to see children’s literature section. Less Dog Man and Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. More Newberry and Caldecott Award winning novels and classic literature. Students continue to have paltry selections of poor quality books and tired graphic novels in a never-ending series.
Imagine a shelf of classic children’s literature instead of shelves upon shelves of enshittified content. Kids get enough click bait online, they need deep reading in the real world!
