I called the New Mexico health insurance exchange today to find out how much my self-employed insurance premium will be going up once the ACA credits disappear in a couple of days.

Turns out New Mexico, under our progressive Latina governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, is making up the credits. My health insurance is actually going DOWN next year.

We also have free childcare, free college, free school meals and, in Albuquerque, free public transportation and free animal adoptions. Bilingualism is written into our state constitution, as is reproductive freedom. Our state question is “Green or red?” And it pertains to chile, which we spell with an e.

After my recent viral post about how New Mexico is making up for lost ACA subsidies for all residents, many of you asked me how the state can afford this and all the other progressive public programs we have here.
