In January 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned NS Silver, a Russian owned oil tanker. About a year later, the vessel, now renamed Silver, is anchored near the Houthi controlled port of Salif, north of Hudaydah, effectively bypassing the Djibouti based United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism for Yemen (UNVIM). In February 2025, Silver lost the “NS” and gained a new owner, a shell company in the United Arab Emirates. She turned off her automatic identification system (AIS) for a while before reappearing off the coast of Sudan in October 2025, traveling to Iran’s southern coast for a little more than a month, loitering off the coast of Fujairah and then making her way to Ras Issa. On the Global Fishing Watch map, red shows its earlier activity as NS Silver. Green shows its current track as Silver. This MarineTraffic map shows her most recent position allowing us to find her in this Planet imagery. NS SILVER is a chemical and oil products tanker built in 2004 and also known as SAPPHIRE. It has operated under multiple names and flags and is tied to companies linked to Sovcomflot, Russia’s state owned shipping company. The vessel was sanctioned for exporting Russian oil products after Western sanctions took effect. It moved cargo mainly from Russian Black Sea ports to Turkey and other countries while using high risk practices such as disabling AIS. Authorities consider it part of Russia’s shadow tanker fleet, used to hide ownership and keep oil exports moving. Because of this, the US, EU, UK, Switzerland, and Ukraine imposed sanctions between 2025 and 2026. Cc. tankertrackers.com, Inc.
