To the People of Greenland,
I have to admit that I’ve never thought much about your country. I’m only thinking about it now because it’s in the news. So, I looked it up and saw the absolute majesty that are your surroundings. Really beautiful. Pristine, almost.
I saw the wildlife that is native to your land and, again, was greatly impressed. And, in the end, as a dumb American who never bothered to look up your country until it was in the news, I have no right to give you advice on anything. But I think there is something you should know.
They will take it.
All you really need to do is peruse an American history book. You don’t even need to look that deeply. No need for close reading or even that much study. They will take it. They’ll take it as if it belonged to them the whole time because they cannot conceive of anything not belonging to them. It’s a sickness they have. A profound illness of uber-ownership.
They’ll take it like they’ve taken from people like us since time immemorial. The god they worship didn’t intend for any of the planet to be ours.
They will take your land and eventually bury your customs by indoctrinating your children with shiny things. They’ll fill your beautiful blue sky with black smoke. They’ll decimate the land until the muskox breathes its last, the last humpback whale sinks to the bottom, and the last narwhal swims out into the Arctic Ocean alone.
They will treat you and yours as an inconvenience and find some place for you to live outside of their field of vision. They will move you farther and farther out until you can’t be seen or heard from.
And, after they’ve destroyed everything, left it unusable and covered in filth, they’ll leave, call your once-beautiful country a “shithole” and blame you for it.
I just wanted you to know.
These facts were kept from me for a long time and I don’t want your children to believe any of the “pilgrims and Indians” shit I was taught.
They consume and leave husks in their wake. Forever feeding. Insatiable.
I really hope nothing bad happens. I hope your people will be fine, will fight. I don’t know if actual Americans will be strong enough to fight them over here. But, even if they destroy the United States, I’d like to still be able to know that there is a beautiful green, blue, and white land that I had never considered before that is still thriving and independent. A land they weren’t able to just take because they wanted it.
I wish you luck. I wish you the real God.
