The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the right to abortion 53 years ago today with Roe v. Wade. Yet, after President Trump stacked the court with justices who opposed abortion rights during his first term, the court overturned that decision, ending the constitutional right to abortion. Now, 20 states have banned some or all abortion.

President Trump and his backers in Congress claimed the end of Roe was about “states’ rights.” It wasn't. Last year, in a targeted move to further restrict care, they “defunded” Planned Parenthood to shut down health centers. The goal is to keep more than a million people from getting care at Planned Parenthood health centers and put as many as 200 health centers at risk of shutting down — most in states where abortion is legal.
