Here in Australia, we’ve introduced new laws to prevent people from engaging on social media before the age of sixteen. This has been brought about because of cyberbullying and the instances of teen suicides that have resulted from this. Also, there are the issues of paedophiles grooming young people, and though the Federal police have caught some of the perpetrators, it’s recognised that many have got away with it.
I’ve posted this because I don’t have an easy answer to this issue. The tech giants have long evaded responsibility, and those responsible for the safety of our young people are increasingly frustrated.
Will it work, or are kids smart enough to outsmart the rules?
Is it a bad or good move?
Should it be the responsibility of governments or the media giants?
Is there an issue of freedom involved where there’s an age issue?
How many countries will follow Australia’s lead?
The questions are endless. What do you think?
