INVESTIGATIVE REPORT: When Foreign Interference Comes From the South

By Annie Koshy

Three secret meetings. American State Department officials. A far-right Canadian separatist group asking for $500 billion in US Treasury funds to backstop an independent Alberta. A fourth meeting being planned.

This is not speculation. This is what Alberta Prosperity Project co-founder Dennis Modry described to NBC News after those meetings concluded. The entire US administration is supportive of Alberta becoming a sovereign country, he said. The White House called it routine civil-society contact. Modry’s account says otherwise.

Former NDP MP Charlie Angus has called for a formal investigation and stated plainly that the White House poses the greatest threat to Canadian unity. The Walrus published a landmark investigation this week documenting that Russian disinformation networks and American political operatives are actively targeting Alberta’s information environment to amplify separatist sentiment. CSIS director Daniel Rogers confirmed on May 9 that the referendum process is vulnerable to foreign interference.

The Centurion Project, which illegally accessed the personal information of 2.9 million Albertans, has documented connections to the separatist movement’s political leadership. BC Premier David Eby called what the Alberta Prosperity Project did treason. A former senior US State Department official told NBC the Trump administration’s engagement was irresponsible as hell.

When a foreign government meets three times with domestic separatists to discuss the mechanics of breaking up Canada, when that government’s president has repeatedly called for Canada to become the 51st state, and when the Leader of the Official Opposition’s economic narrative is being deployed by that same president as justification for annexation, the question of who is actually threatening Canadian unity has a documented and specific answer.

It is not the Liberal Party of Canada.

The full investigative report, including the documented network of foreign interference, the Russian influence operations and what CSIS has confirmed about referendum vulnerability, is behind the paywall at the link below.
