Make money doing the work you believe in

In a recent interview with NPR, Christian nationalist Doug Wilson again advocated repealing the 19th Amendment and removing women’s right to vote.

He said when the United States is governed by the “Christian constitution,” only the head of the household would have the right to vote, but only if they are Christian.

The interviewer, Leila Fadel, who did an incredible job conducting the interview, asked him if she as a Muslim woman would have the right to vote in his vision of a “Christian nation.” He looked right at her and said “no.”

This is the man deeply admired by Pete Hegseth, the current secretary of defense, who he invited to speak at the Pentagon’s “worship service.”

Pete Hegseth has shared Wilson’s views on repealing women’s right to vote on his official X account.

Christian nationalists like Doug Wilson, Dale Partridge, Joel Webbon, and others have repeatedly called for women to lose the right to vote because they firmly believe women are too emotional and empathetic, so they vote in ways that tend to lean more democratic and, as they say, “lead to the erosion of Christian values and western society.”

Not only is this clearly a misogynistic belief but it is also a terribly weak view of God.

I will always find it so ironic how Christian nationalists advocate such a hyper masculine, muscular, aggressive, and all powerful god, but that god can’t even succeed if women have the right to vote. Quite frankly, that is such a supremely weak, insufferable, petty, and misogynistic god who has obviously been invented by supremely weak, insufferable, petty, and misogynistic men.

Yes, I didn’t capitalize the word god on purpose, because I do not believe Christian Nationalism worships the God revealed by Jesus Christ. Christian Nationalism worships itself.

It’s also deeply hypocritical how these same Christian nationalist voices always condemn Islam for oppression of women, especially in places like Afghanistan and Iran, yet when you listen to their theology and politics, they have the same despicable low view of women and what they believe to be their true role in life should be that they criticize in radical Islam.

They do not believe women should hold positions of authority in the church or society in any way, including public office. They want to dismantle no fault divorce, eliminate reproductive rights entirely, constantly criticize women going to college to pursue a career, demand hyper modesty, and believe the only suitable role for women is to be submitted to a husband, depend on him completely for everything, be a homemaker, and have many children.

The reason this is important is that the rise of Christian Nationalism and efforts like the “Save Act,” which would have impeded so many women’s ability to vote if they had changed their name after getting married and other factors, these efforts to erode women’s rights are a central part of the Heritage Foundation’s agenda, which is the architect of project 2025.

I wish this was just some fringe group that could easily be written off and not even need to be discussed, however we are in the current state of our country in large part due to this movement that has gained substantial influence and power.

Those of us who want to preserve our democracy, preserve women’s rights, including the right to vote, preserve the 19th Amendment, and uphold the separation of church and state, we must be aware of this movement and its efforts in order to have an effective impact.

This is especially important for those of us who claim to follow Jesus. We have a greater responsibility to respond to this movement because it claims to be Christian. We must be aware of the theological beliefs that propel this anti-democratic and authoritarian movement so that we may effectively oppose the ways it is hijacking our sacred faith to erode the sacredness of our fellow human beings and our world.

Such movements have been effectively opposed in the past. May we do so again.
