Evangelicalism had way more fear baked into it than we realized—fear of “the world,” fear of getting it wrong, fear of hell.
So much of what we were taught—evangelism, behavior modification, even Bible study—wasn’t about encountering the beauty, peace, and radical love of God. It was about defending against an enemy.
We weren’t learning how to love—we were learning how to fight. And now, actual empathy gets treated as a threat.
It’s heartbreaking. But I think more people are starting to wake up to it.
