True story:
I’m standing in line at Tractor Supply. Just picking up grain, wearing my jeans and Ariat square-toed boots. Some guy in overalls in front of me starts complaining about all the “f*cking liberals” in the area to the cashier, who nods her head knowingly in agreement.
It's now my turn at the cash register. The cashier asks me how I'm doing. I stare her in the eyes and reply, “I'm liberal and doing great”. She immediately looks down with a sort of quietly horrified face, the kind that's trying to stay hidden, and can't seem to look me in the eye during the rest of the transaction.
I have no idea what possessed Overalls-Man to start spewing his political venom inside of a store. Clearly he felt safe doing so because he didn't think any of us “f*cking liberals” were present.
News flash, buddy: there is such a thing as a liberal farmer. We might be wearing jeans and boots and flannel just like you. But we live amongst you. We're at the hay and feed supply. We're at the same local restaurants. Our kids are in school with your kids. And we vote in the same elections.
You don't know who you're standing next to solely based on appearance. So after this particular incident, I got this hat specifically to start debunking the stereotypes that make the right wingers in our area feel so incredibly smug and secure. I want them to start questioning EVERYTHING, starting with the woman in the boots and camo baseball cap.
(Also… this is a very important issue to me… because f*ck ICE).
