At the Intersection: Autistic Pride Chattanooga Honors Black History Month

Maria Davis‑Pierre is a Black autistic advocate and the founder of Autism in Black, Inc. Her work centers Black autistic families, challenges systemic bias in diagnosis and support, and builds community where Black autistic identity is understood without apology or translation.

Maria’s advocacy began with her own experiences navigating systems that misread Black autistic communication and dismissed Black parenting. She created Autism in Black to address the gaps she saw — not just in services, but in cultural understanding, representation, and respect. Her work highlights how racism shapes access, how bias shapes interpretation, and how Black autistic people and families are pushed to fight for support that should have been available from the start.

Through trainings, community education, and national visibility, Maria has shifted conversations about autism to include the realities of Black autistic life. She models what it looks like to build structures that affirm identity instead of erasing it.

What We Carry Forward at APC

We honor Maria’s leadership because it reflects the work we do here: creating spaces where Black autistic people are believed, supported, and centered. Her advocacy reminds us that community care is built by those who refuse to accept erasure as the norm.
