The book is about many different things: the history of American efforts to keep its wealthiest in check; how American oligarchs have dominated and decimated American democracy throughout the past; how America built one of the world’s leading anti-corruption playbooks, only to watch it implode; and how we’ve now entered an unprecedented era of both oligarchy and kleptocracy. The book has many moving parts, from Hawaiian annexation to the role of corporate America in whitewashing both Putin and Xi to the decimation of campaign finance regulations. It also pulls back the curtain on how American oligarchs are propelling American empire, from Canada to Greenland and beyond.

But the book, at its core is about one idea: that America’s wealthiest are now not just threats to American democracy, but to American national security writ large. They’ve become vectors for authoritarian influence both at home and abroad. And if we’re ever to restore American democracy, we must demolish American oligarchy.
