I’ve spent most of the past day texting with friends and loved ones in Los Angeles. So many people I know have lost their homes or been evacuated. Others are waiting with go bags, terrified they’ll get the call next. Another, a public health and disasters expert just told me this is expected to become the costliest fire event in human history. An insurance crisis is going to ruin even more lives in California in the aftermath of this tragedy. I am sick to my stomach and raging at a country and a world that would prefer to protect corporations and billionaires rather than directly confront the carbon threat and invest in infrastructure that will allow us to survive the nightmarish future our leaders have wrought for us.
