I've only one more apple tree to winter prune. My pruning technique depends on a tree's location and rootstock, but I'm lazy and stick to moderately vigorous rootstock to make harvesting easy. I've restricted this ‘Sunset’ to 5 main branches, letting it develop a goblet form. This entails pruning out all central stems and making access to the centre easy, without knocking any of the branches.

I like to think of ‘Sunset’ as the Scots ‘Cox’. Very similar flavour and easier to grow here than ‘Cox.’

As you can see, there's no shortish of lichen here, so even deciduous trees can host some all year round greenery!
