The Shah and his wife lived like royalty, he flew meals in from Paris on the Concord, and she bathed in milk while many of the citizens starved. Their opulencec, decadence, and disregard for Iranian citizens culminated in a coup in 1979 (we remember it as the day our embassy staff in Tehran were kidnapped), where the Shah was overthrown and flew to the U.S. for refuge. It has been reported that the 747 (that we provided) was so heavy from the gold he stole from Iranian coffers, that it barely got off the ground departing Tehran airport.
