Elisa Griensen, and the battle of the Mexican David, and the United States Goliath.

On April 12 1916, well into the Mexican Revolution, American troops entered Mexican territory to seek the revolutionary leader Francisto Villa, as he had entered US territory and sacked a few towns (in this case, Columbus New Mexico) to continue the struggle in Mexico.

Back then, Venustiano Carranza protested this move, and the Mexican Ambassador in the US left in protest… But the US didn’t care of both things.

Getting back to the story. This expedition had up to 15,000 soldiers with orders of apprehending Villa, and was commanded by Major Frank Tompkins, who had to remain on the outskirts of the city of Parral, Chihuaha; however, against the orders received, he entered it. General Ismael Lozano, commander of the Mexican military detachment in the city, asked him to leave.

Griensen, who at the time was 28 years old and studying in the United States, was on vacation and was among the protesters. Seeing that no one was taking any action, she demanded that the city's mayor, José de la Luz Herrera, take the initiative to drive the Americans out of the city. Unsuccessful in her attempt, Griensen asked for support from the people around her, took the national flag from a nearby school, and rallied some of the older school children to her side.

Along with the children and some women, Griensen headed toward the US troops, with the crowd following behind her, shouting cheers of support for Villa and Mexico. She took a Mauser rifle from the armory and addressed Major Tompkins, demanding him to leave, with the crowd already getting to the point to riot, and the students throwing stones and insults at the US troops. Griensen then fired the first shots with her rifle, thus causing the troops to run off from the town. There were no causualties, but, several wounded soldiers, including Thompkins.

Why am I retelling this story? Simple: The United States has never considered Latin America with any sense of Respect. To the government, and a lot of its Citizens, consider anything below the border to be theirs by Right. This is something that it is reflected in the US foreign policy with Latin America, their trade deals, their slang towards us… The Way Trump has been behaving lately with its own citizens is how the US has treated Latin America for years, only now they that end of the stick.

Worse yet, there are a few loud people here in Mexico (i.e. , Lily Tellez, whom nobody voted for this shame of a Conservative Senator) who welcome US intervention in Mexico, only because it hurts to them that they have been rejected Twice in the national elections, and they are quickly losing not just power, but influence. So now they fall to turncoat politics and anything that they can do to make the US to come here.

The US can bluster and threaten Canada, the EU, China, Japan, with sanctions, military actions and other stuff… But to Mexico and Latin America, they feel they don’t need to.

They just do it… This is why we need more Elisa Griensens, and less Lily Tellez
