Fuck
Have you ever wondered why ‘fuck’ is such an offensive word?
To me it always seemed strange that we would see a word describing sex as a bad thing. Then on top of that, how we use the word was also strange to me.
I.e. if you say “fuck you”, that’s not a compliment… but shouldn’t it be?
Shouldn’t it be a sign of interest that you want to have sex with someone? Or are you saying that you see yourself as a rapist and want to forcibly have sex with someone? Is that the veiled threat?
Still though, doesn’t that mean you insult yourself in the process?
Anyway… what I found out is that the word originates from “fokken”, which Is a Germanic word for “breeding”. In some ways this explains things further. Because saying that you will breed someone, definitely takes out any romantic intention. But again, I find that we only breed things that we want more of; even if the method is questionable.
So in the end, I’m not sure if I’m wiser. And I think I’ll remain with my original interpretation of why this is considered offensive: the tone and the background culture.
Tone: We often forget that words were created because of how they sound. And if you consider that we say things like “what the fuck” and “who the fuck”, the definition of the word clearly doesn’t apply anymore. But if you imagine a farmer that is trying to explain to someone what his animals were doing. While pondering on what the sound was… then the story fits again (for me).
Background culture: The Western world is heavily influenced by Christianity and sex still remains a taboo subject because of that religion. So talking openly about sex was/is considered inappropriate and as such, you could say that you place a ‘spell’ on someone, by claiming they are indecent.
Alternatively, it could be seen as a class divider. Because ‘decent’ people don’t speak like that (in public). So if you use the word, you indicate that you are of a lower class, and as such are supposedly a greater threat (a whole other story).
My internal monologue now
The dark: I can now use that word with the idea in the back of my mind of having someone bred forcibly. Adding a layer of hostility… (cue evil laughter) and ridicule!
The bright: It’s nice that we settled on a word collectively that highlights the act of pleasuring and merging with each other. It shows how love is present in everything. (cue soft harp music)
My integrated self: Fuck it. Just use the word, because it’s a fun sound and very few people think this deeply about words to begin with. It’s the context in which you use the word that matters anyway, as is the case with most words.
That’s what makes language fucked up. Anyway, sorry for wasting your fucking time ;) Carry on.
Speaking of “carrying”…. (NO mind. NO. It’s enough now)
