The blowback to over-censoring is _one_ possible explanation for the rise of Trump, but it's not the only explanation and also the timelines don't quite line up.

Even before Elon, Twitter was bad for discourse. I expect most of what I read to be longform. I want to grapple with interesting ideas, and if it's worth writing about, then it probably can't be summed up in a tweet.

An opinion article in a newspaper is first-and-foremost gated by "Is this in-depth and well-written" and most conspiracy theorists are going to fail that test for _anything_ they write. Twitter gave a voice to those who are incapable of writing an essay. That censoring-by-writing-quality I think is the most important tool we've had throughout history for restricting really dumb ideas for entering discourse.

Even if Tucker Carlson himself can probably write a book, who else is he going to interview if none of his base can write books?

I wouldn't say that era is quite gone yet thanks to ChatGPT, but it probably will be by this time next year. No change in curation techniques can fix this fundamental problem which was brought on by a rise in technology, not by any political headwinds
