Is Data Center Construction Contaminating Your Well Water?

More than 7,300 people have spoken up about data centers in their area. We’ve mapped 4,377 concerns so far looking at construction, proposals, rumors, and active sites. People across the country are talking! More communities are coming together to fight against these data centers and winning.

Following the addition of a photo gallery to the site, we received this concerning image from Louisa, Virginia. The photo depicts tap water from a residence located directly across from a data center under construction.

Many people have asked: How can construction impact a well?

Data center construction near residential wells poses both contamination and structural risks to groundwater.

Excavation can introduce sediments, chemicals, and pathogens into poorly sealed wells, while construction runoff and improper waste disposal create additional pollution pathways.

Heavy machinery vibrations may crack well casings or shift their structure, and nearby digging can disrupt local hydrology, potentially redirecting water flow away from existing wells or causing them to run dry entirely.

These facts alone are reason enough to tell neighbors about data centers, so they can test their wells and make sure their water is safe to drink.

Keep us posted on your water if you leave near a proposed, in construction, or already running data center.
