A little fashion history tidbit I found out today (as it’s a bit chilly and I was doing research…) is apparently in the 15th century, the first knitted shirts or tunics were produced on the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey; hence having the name "jersey.” They didn’t become “sweaters” until about 1890, when athletes took to them and, you guessed it, SWEAT in them.
But…how then do you account for this?:
Hmmmmmm… Still, sweaters are pretty old. And warm. And…I think I’ll go put on another layer! Brrr.
