On March 22, 1972, the U.S. Senate passed the Equal Rights Amendment, stating, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
Although it came close, the amendment fell short of the 38 states required for ratification before the 1982 deadline.
