A Comforting Breakfast: Salmon & Mashed Potatoes
Because sometimes, savory is the best way to start the day.
This morning, I skipped the usual sweet cereal or scrambled eggs and went straight for comfort. I made a plate of warm, creamy mashed potatoes topped with flaked pink salmon—and honestly, it hit the spot like nothing else.
It wasn’t fancy. Just pantry staples, but when you put them together right, magic happens.
I started by boiling a few potatoes until soft, mashed them up with a good knob of butter and a splash of milk until they were smooth, fluffy, and just the right kind of rich. I seasoned them simply—with salt, pepper, and a touch of garlic powder.
Then came the salmon. I used canned pink salmon—nothing gourmet, but wildly underrated. I sautéed some onions in a little oil, added the salmon straight from the can, and let it cook until slightly crispy around the edges. A squeeze of lemon, a little paprika, and a handful of frozen peas brought it all together.
The result? A cozy, savory bowl of mashed potatoes with that satisfying, salty umami from the salmon, plus a pop of color and sweetness from the peas.
It reminded me that breakfast doesn’t have to follow any rules. Some mornings, your body craves a grounding, protein-packed plate—and this one delivered. Plus, it kept me full for hours.
If you’ve got some canned salmon and potatoes lying around, give it a shot. This might become your new favorite morning ritual.
Until next bite,
