On the day before Thanksgiving I had a lunch with a Jewish Sephardic woman who was born in Colombia. Her family immigrated from the Ottoman Empire around the time of WWI. Her grandmother’s family had lived IN THE SAME HOUSE in Jerusalem for 7 generations when she left; since the mid-1700s. How long had they lived in the city? She had no idea. Could have been that they “never left,” there since biblical times. Or maybe they moved to the Ottoman Empire from Spain, during the inquisition. My thought hearing her story: Some colonizers! There for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
