I once had a boss who was let go suddenly.

She'd worked there 10 years. I was the only one who walked down and waited while she got into her cab.

For the first time, I saw her eyes well up. Those ten minutes mattered.

Dan Moore wrote a simple reminder: If someone is laid off, say goodbye. Don't hide. Don't avoid the awkwardness. Just show up.

Don't promise to stay in touch if you won't. Don't complain about the company. Both are common. Both aren't helpful.

We're all one bad day away from needing a job. It takes less than ten minutes to be decent.

Just say goodbye.
