Our early rising baby serviceberry trees are setting their first sets of true leaves. Checking on them this morning gave me visions of the immense potential for nourishing local ecology and humans at the same time contained within each tiny seedling. Each one could live up to a hundred years feeding countless birds, bees and children.

This felt like a fitting way to mark the start of a new year.
