The Whitney Review (which this article is reviewing) by Whitney Mallett is already an indispensable voice of canonization and criticism in the NYC avant garde. When it birthed itself with zero institutional support a few years ago, it was a corrective to my reading tastes, which skewed to trade companies, but Bookforum was as underground as it got for me, I had no access to the literary lineage to the contemporary avant garde that our country’s awards don’t seem to realize exists. Maybe they are like me and they had no way of learning about it outside The Whitney Review. That’s changed now. Why did this take so long?
