State Sens. John Liu and Charles Lavine want to add the U.S. Capitol riot—which happened five years ago Tuesday on Jan. 6, 2021—to a list of required teaching in New York state schools that includes the Holocaust and slavery.
Liu, of Queens, and Lavine, of Long Island, have proposed legislation that would "require New York public schools teach students about the true history of that fateful day."
“Jan. 6 was a pivotal moment in our nation’s history and a moment that should not be forgotten lest it should be repeated,” Liu said.
Liu cited concerns with whitewashing of the event, which saw hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump storming the U.S. Capitol building after Trump lost the 2020 Election, leading to clashes with law enforcement.
“The idea that Jan. 6 was a ‘love fest’ as opposed to a violent insurrection just confounds all commonsense,” Liu said. “And we need to combat his efforts with this kind of legislation.”
Liu said that “it’s certainly okay to teach varying perspectives, but we should not allow our schoolkids or anybody really to forget,” Liu said.
Teachers have reported struggling with how to discuss the Jan. 6 events without appearing bias.
