5 Ways to Stay Safe (and Sane) This Winter

Winter can feel long when you’re spending more time indoors. Here are 5 simple tips to help you stay both safe and mentally healthy during those cold, snowy days.

  1. Keep a routine (but make it cozy)

Try to wake up and eat meals around the same time each day. This gives your days structure, even when they all start to blend together. But don’t be rigid about it—if your routine includes a midday nap under your favorite blanket, that counts too.

  1. Move your body, even a little

You don’t need to run a marathon in your living room. Gentle stretches, walking around your home, or even standing up during commercials helps. Movement keeps your joints happy, improves your mood, and helps you sleep better at night.

  1. Stay connected to people

Isolation is the real danger of winter. Call a friend, video chat with family, or even chat with the grocery delivery person. If you’re comfortable with technology, join an online group about something you enjoy. Human connection matters more than we realize.

  1. Let the light in

Open your curtains during the day. Natural light helps regulate your sleep and lifts your spirits. If you have a sunny spot by a window, spend some time there with your morning coffee or afternoon book.

  1. Prepare for emergencies (then stop worrying)

Keep a list of important phone numbers handy, make sure you have enough medication, and stock some non-perishable food. Once you’ve prepared, let it go. You’ve done what you can, and that’s enough.

Winter will pass. Until it does, be gentle with yourself.
