Day 20 of our camper van escapades and the last time that we’ll wake up in the van on this trip. But the first morning in almost three weeks that we’ve slept until the alarm went off at 6.30am.
As we lay there drinking our usual tea and coffee, before we got out of bed, we watched the swallows swooping, diving, and circling just above the freshly cut grass beside the van.
It’s been a wet night with heavy rain showers passing through. One of the things I’ll miss most when were back in the house is the sound of rain on the roof.
We check out Google maps to find a path to walk Evie. First we see a road called Dalsgårdvej (a ‘vej’ is a road in Danish) and then we notice that the village right next to the campsite site is called Dalsgård!
Why is that special you may ask? Well, Kims last name is Dalsgaard. And Dalsgård = Dalsgaard.
In 1948 Denmark made some changes to their alphabet and to the way the language is written. They added the letter ‘å’ to replace the old ‘aa’. While most words with ‘aa’ inserted the new letter ‘å’ instead, some traditional city names (like Aalborg) and certain family names preferred to keep the original ‘aa’ spelling. So the village updated its name, but Kims family didn't.
It entertained us for a Dalsgaard to walk down Dalsgårdvej in Dalsgård. Imagine if we bought a house here! 🤣
We were in no rush to get home. Kim cooked bacon and eggs - which had travelled with us from a local shop in Bedale (Yorkshire). We’ve never seen chicken eggs so big - they were huge. And two of the three that Kim cracked open had double yolks - I haven’t seen one of those since I was a kid. And damn they tasted good.
Then it was time. Time to pack up one last time. Time to drive the final three and a bit hours home.
That's the end of our big camper van escapade for 2026. But we'll still do smaller trips this summer and autumn.
So I need to know - where are we going next? And when are we going? Can we go tomorrow after I've caught up on the washing? It can't be too soon.
