Make money doing the work you believe in

We're swapping facts for emotion. Two studies help prove what we've all been feeling lately:

  1. Researchers looked at books and New York Times pages since 1850 along with Google search trends. They found the frequency of rationality words like "data" and "analysis" are plummeting while emotional words like "imagine" and "feel" are surging.

  2. A Harvard study found job ads for CEOs have changed to prioritize social and emotional skills and deprioritize rational skills like managing budgets.

We like to think of our post-truth society as new, but both studies (and others) show the changes have been building for a long time.

Talk of reason peaked in the early '80s and has been in decline ever since. For people who communicate for a living - brands, marketers, writers - this means you can't just spam the logic button to brute force change in people.

Facts still matter but they cannot be the sole strategy. You have to build experiences that feel before they make sense.
