Call it the Dallas effect. Fertility rates declined in step with the introduction of cable TV across Indian states in the 1980s. That’s not, it seems, because people had something else to do in the evening but because cable TV viewers had a glimpse into other lives – ones that were richer, with more personal liberty and fewer children.
