Leaving GE after 16 years as CEO was harder than I let on at the time. There were dark days. You spend three decades defining yourself by a job, and when it’s gone, you have to figure out who you actually are.
Nine years later, I’m in a different place. I’ve learned that reinvention isn’t a solo project. It’s built on faith, family, friendship, and work. I’ve learned that being present beats running the show. That curiosity in unfamiliar territory keeps you young. I’ve also gained perspective on topics like globalization, AI, and leadership that only time and distance can provide.
I also haven’t lost my ability to laugh at myself and others.
That’s what The Long View is about. I’m writing it for anyone navigating their own pivot, volatility, and the search for meaning beyond the title on the door.
