At some point last year, I was told by another writer about the advice Claire Keegan gave to students in her writing workshop. She said that writing fiction well involves writing pictures. During their workshops with Keegan when reading a participant’s work they were told to call out when they encountered a written picture. The logic went, if you’re not writing pictures, you’re probably engaging in some form of summary or ‘telling’. Hence good writing involves writing pictures.
