Jets Start Training Camp Next Week, Health Of Edge Jermaine Johnson First Big Test

New head coach Aaron Glenn is planning a new defensive scheme for his team and star edge Jermaine Johnson will be a big part of that.

But Johnson could begin the preseason on the PUP list if the explosiveness isn’t there after rehabbing from his torn Achilles, according to reports.

He’s expected to be ready for the start of the regular season but Glenn wants to take a cautious approach. Other than Will Macdonald, there is no depth at the position.

So they can’t afford to lose him again.

Johnson is pushing back after ESPN named him as one of the injured players from last year to be concerned about.

In reality, it’s a tough injury to rebound from if you’re a player who needs push from his legs. There will be stiffness that can’t be avoided and also the possibility of reinjury.

Unlike Aaron Rodgers, who suffered the same injury he has youth in his favor so it’s expected he will rebound quicker.

A bigger concern for the team, whether Johnson is healthy or not is line depth, particularly at the edge position.

There has been depth issues at DT that needs to get fixed. Offseason moves could help. Stopping the run consistently has been a problem so we’ll find out soon if that’s been addressed.

Expect to see some answers as training camp opens up.

With Glenn’s defensive background we expect he’ll put these questions to rest.
