Make money doing the work you believe in

It is outrageous that the Michigan Child Protective Services system was turned into a weapon against the Buttigieg family. However, I disagree with Mr. Buttigieg that “the police officer, the CPS professional, and the forensic interviewers” were “just doing their jobs” because “[w]hen a serious allegation is made, they respond.” This is wrong. The “seriousness” of the allegation cannot be the criterion for the state taking children away from their parents, even overnight. The credibility of the accusation, including whether or not it is an anonymously conveyed second- hand facially crazy claim about what Mr. Buttigieg supposedly told someone years before, should have been considered by the police and/or CPS. It has to be their job to assess the source and nature of the accusation before using state authority to disturb a family in this way. Otherwise, any anonymous malignant crank in America can make a patently nonsensical accusation and use state child welfare authorities to have their revenge on a public figure.
