We in Canada have been watching the US gruesomely eviscerate itself since 2016. For a small number of Canadians, the temptation that they too could let loose their most egregious failings and possibly gain power and wealth, or a least hurt vulnerable people with impunity, has held great attraction. The likes of the smirking Kevin O’Leary, Conrad Black, Danielle Smith, Jordan Peterson, and Jamil Jivani, full of hubris and disdain for Canada urged on the CPC pet attack dog Pierre Poilievre, confident his lies and rage-baiting slogans would find purchase. They slavered at the possibility that they could import Trump’s destructive chaos here and win a place grovelling to Trump at Mar a Lago.
But, big Oops!
The majority of Canadians are appalled by the economic turmoil, social chaos, and rhetoric of hate roiling over the US in a disgusting wave of greed and corruption. They are watching the US economy implode for regular folks, watching goons terrorize anybody and everybody. Canadians see the US align internationally with enemies and listen to the Bully in Chief threaten to smash our sovereignty and loot our country, and the majority are saying no.
But what else does the CPC offer anymore except extreme right-wing MAGA culture-war talking points of stripping rights, enabling the wealthiest, bludgeoning the vulnerable?
Frankly, Mark Carney is leading a pretty centrist government, visionary and strategic with the needs of Canada and Canadians at the core.
Poilievre’s CPC won’t make life more affordable; the CEOs and investors who surround him will make sure of that. And with typical shortsightedness, they’ll leap to make a quick buck selling off our mineral rights and water in hope that Trump might act in good faith and give them seat at the Orange one’s table. Fat chance.
There is just no place in the CPC for the traditional centre-right voter. Its leaders are driven by the virulence, ignorance, and conspiracies of the extremist, anti-everything Maple MAGA crowd. So if you are a Canadian willing to take the long view, who respects the laws of the land and the right of people to make their own decisions about their bodies or who they love without your input, if you believe in Canadian sovereignty and our dominion over our resources, allegiances, and trading partners, then support the Liberals because they likely represent your values more than the current CPC does.
