I attended an Anglo-Catholic church this morning and sat behind three children and their grandmother. As the service went on the children became more fidgety, more bored, more childlike. I could see others around us getting frustrated, exchanging glances of irritation, raising an eyebrow. But I can’t help but think God enjoyed those children acting like children in the sanctuary. It reminded me of something Robert Jenson rightly said: β€œGod is not nearly as serious and religious as we are.”

I say this as a member of the clergy now:

Clergy have a duty to display courage by standing in solidarity with the bullied and oppressed - especially when the rest of the Church and the world lacks the courage to do so.

Right now, that’s the people of Ukraine.

Lord have mercy.
