Make money doing the work you believe in
I understand why this massive, rapid rearmament is happening - Del Monte explains it clearly. I’ve been wondering out loud for days about the national costs in terms of services for everything: environmental protection and rehabilitation, health, education, and on and on…. If we’re spending a gazillion billion on weapons, it’s not there for the business of daily living for the majority of the world’s citizens. Sure the wealthy can afford to pay privately for goods and services, but the rest of us are dependent on government funded services - except the government is buying weapons!
Poincaré would recognize the setup. The comfortable answer — the one you will hear from every direction, and the one holding up more of your personal planning than you probably realize — is that none of this matters because nuclear weapons make great-power war unthinkable. The bomb, in this telling, is the referee that structure fired.
Whether that is true is the rest of this memo. So is what this geometry does to your money while we find out.
