Atlanta United get knocked out of the U.S. Open Cup in humiliating fashion in Orlando (4-1) with the only goal coming from Latte Lath late in the match.
The team doesn't have enough depth at center back and so with Mihaj still likely out after receiving a knock in the prior match against Orlando City on Saturday, Hernandez was put in a three center back position which forced Gregerson further up and unable to protect the space behind Hernandez and Edwards. Despite a big mistake by Hibbert leading to the third goal, he was largely hung out to dry in the first half and made some unbelievably good saves to prevent the scoreline from being closer to 7-0 at halftime.
Tonight proved that Tata's system had covered up the lack of talent by this team with toothpicks and string at this point and as soon as he tried a different tactic they get caught out. Incoming President Mauricio Culebro needs to make a bold statement this summer and overhaul the squad. At the Atlanta NWSL event, Josh Blank stated that there were no financial constraints being enforced from the top, indicating the hand cuffs are off should Culebro and Chris Henderson want to take advantage of this declaration in the summer transfer window.
However, if no changes are being made to the Head of Recruitment and Jonathan Spector is still calling the shots when it comes to scouting, it's unclear whether much will change.
