I’m staying on Substack. Here’s the thing: you can slice and dice it any way you want, but every social platform profits from extremism in some way. Why? Because they can’t control all of it and when they try, it pops back up. It doesn’t matter if it has subscriber revenue or not: the data from the audience looking at that content is what advertisers care about. Twitter/X is an obvious example of that (plenty of advertisers fled, but plenty stayed). The same goes for Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Whatever platform you’re on, it’s a personal choice whether to stay, and a lot of writers here have spent time building publications—and they’re still building. Other platforms can make assurances, but unless you own it, there’s no guarantee that their moderation policies or community guidelines will stick. The only content we can truly control is our own.
