saw a quote the other day at an exhibition of magazine work from the 90s that said something like ‘nothing we made at this time was a reference to or derived from anything’, which is bullshit - because everything is a reference. Really we are all just reinterpreting what has come before and there shouldn’t be shame in that. This call out culture is so sad because it ends up putting a road block in the way so often because people are so scared to be pulled up for anything. Jonathan Anderson spoke really well on this in an interview I watched recently, saying that if you look at painters throughout history, they would have been learning from the old masters, they would have been doing interpretations of Goya or say Rembrant and in this process of learning they would have created their own style, it’s all interesting because people are just trying to rediscover themselves through the creative process that they love, even without knowing it, all creativity starts with interpretation.
