"In June of 2015, inside a packed Roman Catholic church in Wilmington, Delaware, something happened at the end of a presidential eulogy that no one who witnessed it would ever forget, and it was not a speech or a prayer or a song, it was a single, unscripted human embrace that said everything words could not. President Barack Obama had just finished delivering one of the most emotionally raw eulogies of his presidency, standing at the pulpit of St. Anthony of Padua Church to honor Beau Biden, the Vice President's eldest son, a 46-year-old Iraq War veteran and two-term Delaware Attorney General who had lost a private two-year battle with brain cancer. Over a thousand mourners filled the church, including former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, General Ray Odierno who had commanded Beau in Iraq and personally presented him with the Legion of Merit medal that day, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who had quietly asked to attend and perform when he learned through a mutual friend that the Biden family loved his music. But it was the moment Obama stepped down from that pulpit, bowed toward the altar, walked directly to Joe Biden, and pulled him into a long, wordless embrace, pressing his cheek against his Vice President's and then placing a gentle kiss on his cheek, that broke something open in every person watching. In his eulogy, Obama had looked Biden directly in the eye and declared that Joe was his brother, that Michelle and he thanked God every day the Bidens were in their lives, and that the entire Obama family had become honorary members of the Biden clan. He described Beau Biden as Joe 2.0, a man who did in 46 years what most people could not do in 146, who left nothing in the tank, and who had made a grown-up decision as a very young boy that he would live a life of meaning. The hug that followed was not performed for cameras. It was one grieving family member holding up another."
