Some chapters arrive quietly and sit beside you.

Chapter 23 is one of those.

Kristina is thirteen, on a beach in the Hamptons, trying to name the strange heaviness she’s been carrying since she was too young to understand it.

And Sandy, in the way only Sandy can, doesn’t try to fix her. She doesn’t promise forever. She doesn’t offer some shiny little answer wrapped in emotional bubble wrap.

She just says:

You don’t have to pretend with me.

And later:

You’re not alone.

Sometimes that’s the whole rescue.

Sometimes lighter is enough.
