Dec. 31 - After students joined striking merchants over the past two days and staged large-scale demonstrations at universities nationwide, Iran’s Ministry of Science announced that university classes would move online.

According to a statement from the Ministry’s Deputy for Education, classes at Allameh Tabataba’i University and Shahid Beheshti University will be held online through the end of the semester. The University of Tehran has also announced that classes will be online next week.

The Ministry of Science has further authorized administrators at universities nationwide to move classes online for the remainder of the term.

Without mentioning the student protests, the Ministry cited “cold weather, problems stemming from energy imbalances, and concern for students’ well-being” as the reasons for the decision.
