In 1811, the largest slave uprising in U.S. history started at Woodland Plantation in Louisiana's River Parishes.

Jo and Joy Banner grew up in Wallace, a River Parishes town on the West Bank of the Mississippi. Nathaniel Wallace, a formerly enslaved Union soldier, founded it in 1886.

The route the enslaved took in 1811 runs through Wallace. 

It became Cancer Alley.

The twins founded The Descendants Project to protect and preserve their community.

For three years, they fought to stop a petrochemical plant.

In January 2024, they bought Woodland Plantation.

Six months later, Formosa Plastics backed down.
