The films of German Expressionism, born in the Weimar Republic era (roughly 1910s–early 1930s), are direct transmissions from the subconscious. They excavate the psyche, circling fear, obsession, and the mysterious architecture of the mind.

If you haven’t gone beyond The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, or Metropolis, you should. Seek out The Hands of Orlac, Warning Shadows, or Destiny, films that move even deeper into the darker interior, where identity fractures and the unconscious takes form.
