Here is a story from the real life of today’s America.
A young family lived in a small town in Southwest Florida. They worked, paid their bills, celebrated holidays with family and friends, and went to the beach when they could—just ordinary people living an ordinary life.
The husband is an American Black man. His wife is from Brazil and holds a green card—a legal document that allows her to live in the United States.
Then ICE agents began appearing in neighborhoods like theirs.
After everything she saw on TV and online about raids and detentions in places like Minnesota, California, and Chicago, fear took over. A woman with brown skin and an accent suddenly felt like a target.
She stopped going outside. She couldn’t even bring herself to go to the grocery store. Her life became a self-imposed house arrest.
Fear moved into their home and never left.
One day she packed a few things and flew back to Brazil.
She never returned.
Heartbroken, her husband went to Brazil hoping to bring her home. He came back alone.
It was a happy young family. They had dreams. They wanted to raise children in this country.
Instead, this country broke their family.
