What a day in New York City! Fifteen years on, we returned to Zuccotti Park, site of Occupy Wall Street, to welcome into office a mayor for the 99%. Many in the crowd were too young, but we oldies remembered. Mamdani had encouraged people to bring snacks and around me people shared hot Linden tea from a thermos, mandarin oranges and stories, as we packed in tight to keep warm. We never got close to the jumbotrons and left before the ceremony began, but already it felt as if New Yorkers had inaugurated something. Hope is not passive, as Public Advcate Jumaane Williams said. It will take active effort by all of us. I think we are up for it. Ready for a New Day. That’s us!
